Balancing Toys

Movement by balance or counter balance can be traced back to the cultures of China, India and Burma.

Balancing toys made in France in 1778 used mercury for the balancing movement.

Balancing toys became very popular in Victorian times and were regarded as ‘scientific novelty’ toys.  There were lots of different versions to be found, parrots, monkeys, boats etc…

Circuses and Punch & Judy shows were firm favourites  and the toymakers would base their toys on these forms of entertainment.

They all clearly show that most shapes can be made to balance with the addition of one or more weights placed below the centre of gravity.
